I have often driven past Juliano's Restaurant & Pizzeria while traveling Route 60, and I always think, "We should try that place sometime." Since my hubby & I have been trying to eat at local restaurants - a challenge out this way - we decided to give Juliano's a try last Thursday night. It's a short drive from Robinson Town Center - maybe 5-7 minutes out Route 60 South (Steubenville Pike) in McKees Rocks. When we walked in, we were greeted quickly by the folks at the counter where you can order food to go or pick up your take out orders. We were soon seated in the comfy dining room. I was really in the mood for a pizza, and was a bit disappointed that they did not offer pizza by the slice, until my hubby pointed out the calzones. I selected a small calzone with ricotta, mozzarella, black olives, spinach, mushrooms & onions. My hubby was in the mood for pasta, so he ordered broccoli & chicken fettuccine alfredo, which came with a salad & garlic bread. The side salad, complete with crunchy homemade garlic croutons, was delivered in just a few minutes. It was not long after that our meals arrived. I particularly enjoyed the presentation of my calzone - cut in half, and served on a pizza plate with a side of sauce. On the first bite, I was sold - probably the best calzone I have ever tasted. The crust was exactly how I like it - crunchy on the outside & a little chewy on the inside. I was surprised at the filling, as my calzone was stuffed with all of my toppings & just a little cheese - again, just how I like it. And the sauce - yum! The small was sufficient in size that I ate half & took half home, which I enjoyed almost as much the next day for lunch. Hubby's pasta was equally delicious - a generous portion, he probably could have taken some home, but he said it was so good he just couldn't stop eating. The chicken was nice & tender, and the amount of sauce was just right for the amount of pasta. We thoroughly enjoyed the garlic bread - there were 4 pieces, so I couldn't help but steal one. Again, it was crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. We were tempted to try dessert, but just couldn't find the room. Overall, the service was friendly & efficient, the atmosphere pleasant, and the price is affordable (under $40 for 2 people including tip). This is one place we will definitely head out to again & I recommend it to anyone trying to escape the miles of chains at Robinson. I've tried starting a blog in the past, and, well, I just haven't kept up with it for more than a couple days. We'll see how I do with this one. |
