Holy Crepe!

When I lived in Rochester, NY my wife and I loved going to this great little crepe restaurant called Simply Crepes. Nothing took the chill off a cold, snowy Rochester afternoon like a warm homemade crepe filled with ham, asparagus and Swiss cheese and topped with a tasty dill sauce.

Since moving to Pittsburgh I have often longed for one of those crepes, especially when the weather is cold and dreary and reminds me of my time in Rochester. So this morning the wife and I headed over to Shady Side for a little shopping and as we thought about where to get breakfast I remembered that a friend had mentioned a crepe place just off Walnut. And I'm glad he did!

This place was great. We both got crepes from the "savory" side of the menu. (they also have a long list of sweet crepes) She got a vegetable mix with cheese and I got ham and cheese. Both came with a salad, and while I questioned the idea of having salad with breakfast it really hit the spot.

The place is actually a little hard to find as it is off Walnut and down in the basement of one of the shops on Filbert. The name ... Crepes Parisiennes. The atmosphere is that of an unassuming local coffee shop and just as you can watch them make your French-style hot chocolate you can also watch them work their magic over the crepe pan.

Speaking of hot chocolate ... I think I just had the best hot chocolate ever. (and I drink a lot of hot chocolate) Their "French-style" hot chocolate is real chocolate melted in a cup! None of this powdered stuff or frothed milk with chocolate syrup, this is REAL hot chocolate. It was so thick you could almost eat it with a spoon.

Anyway, now when I start longing for a crepe I don't have to just reminisce about my days in Rochester, I can instead head over to Shady Side and indulge.
