Dillner Family Farm

This is a follow up to my previous post about family farms and CSA's in the Pittsburgh area. It's a little late as our last allotment came at the end of November but I thought I would write a few thoughts on the experience.

First, I have never eaten so much fruit in my life. We consistently got at least two fruits every week. Strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, peaches, apples, raspberries! If you want to make sure you get plenty of fruit in your diet this is a great way to do it. You get a nice variety as the summer progresses.

Second, if you are going to do a CSA you need to cook a lot. In the weeks that my wife and I did plenty of cooking the amount of veggies was perfect. There were a few weeks when we did not have time to cook (like when my wife worked nights for 5 straight weeks) that we struggled to use our allotment. Again, like the fruit you get a nice variety and it forces you to try new recipes.

You also get plenty of lettuce. If you like salad and fresh lettuce you will like getting it from a CSA. We were always eating great salads this summer.

I look forward to doing it again next summer. Maybe this time I will try to get my hands on some of the locally grown meat.
